What's in the Box:
  • 1 subwoofer
  • Owner’s manual
JBL believes sound quality should never be compromised. And Series III subwoofers make sure you don’t have to compromise flexibility, either. That’s because the high-performance, step-up subwoofers feature SSI™ (Selectable Smart Impedance), an exclusive impedance switch that lets you select the optimum impedance—2 or 4 ohms—for your system. Special aero-cooling design in the voice coil boosts power handling as well as reliability. And an oversized voice coil handles more power than common two-inch voice coils. More power, more reliability, more flexibility—and no compromising. When you’re ready to step up, Series III is your subwoofer.
Product Features:
  • SSI™ (Selectable Smart Impedance)
Most car audio system designs call for 2- or 4-ohm impedance. Series III subwoofers feature an exclusive dual impedance switch that lets you choose either load impedance option. Not available from any other manufacturer, SSI lets you reconfigure your system by simply flipping a switch.
  • Aero-cooled voice coil
The Series III voice coil significantly increases power handling and improves reliability by going with the flow—of air. The woofer’s motor channels air pumped by the cone movement past the voice coil, and the voice coil former exposes the coil’s inner and outer surfaces to the airflow. This aero-cooling design is unique among aftermarket subwoofers.
  • Oversized voice coil
The three-inch (75mm) voice coil proves you don’t have to be a heavyweight to pack a serious punch. It handles more power than conventional two-inch voice coils, yet it’s lighter than four-inch voice coils. It strikes the perfect balance between thermal power handling and low mass.
  • Premium screw-down terminals
Power is the lifeblood of any subwoofer. The terminals on the Series III accommodate up to 8-guage wire (8.37mm2 cross section), which transfers low-resistance, low-loss power to the woofer, even over long wire runs. This ensures the subwoofer—and your music—has the power it needs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great sound , power handling I now have two in my car, with a third in my floor ( will be adding it shortly) .At first I was scepticle about the handling the power I have( rf bd 1500 ) so I ran them at 2 ohms planning to later flip the switches after break in but now I bought another and I'll leave the swtches right where they are and add a third .my amp will be at around 1.3ohms so it will be feeding them around 5 to 600 watts .after this I my even go with 4, love these subs . Always loved jbl amps and subs. This is a lot of sub for the money. You won't regret it.

packaging and websites say 3 inch coil owners in reviews are saying its a typo and its a 2.5 coil can someone please confirm the coil size?

Asked by: JBl Fan3
Hi! The S3-1024 has a 2.5" Voice Coil Diameter.

My Rockford Fosgate R500XD1 is going into protect mode when the S3-1024 is installed with the 2 Ohm setting. When I switch to a 4 Ohm Kicker it works fine and does not go into protect mode. Thoughts? The amp is capable of 2 Ohms according to specs.

I just ordered one of these from sonic, and i plan to buy a second im going to be using a audiopipe 15001d to power em at two ohms the rms out of the amp will be under 1000 watts this should be ok right as long as i dont turn the amp gain to high

Asked by: Shadodies
Just don't under power the units. I stand correct, but the A class, and A/B class amplifiers would start clipping at their maximum output. That would effectively push DC through the speaker Voice coil and fuse it. I haven't don't the research on the D class amplifiers and I don't know what their response to this situation would be in. In pro audio we use Digitial Signal Processoring rack units. Smart first came out with these in the 90's and the intelligent management of the 2 X 15" and and the 1" horn loaded HR driver took at the the horn loaded systems for medium venues for a couple of years. The DSP was tuned to the speakers but now you get good quality DSP units that can can handle multiple speakers/amps system. Thinking of buy of buy a phased array system and getting into audio engineering again. But the HK are so expensive that they must be have some IP setting them apart. Any ideas?

I'm confused by the box dimensions referenced in the manual. It says vented box volume (includes driver + port displacements) should equal 1.5 cubic feet. Is that the gross volume or the net volume? Thanks.

Asked by: Adam201091
It is the gross volume. Please build the box to exactly 1.5 cubic feet and then install the speaker and the port and you will be good to go.

Is the GTR-601 amp a perfect or close to perfect match to push 2 S3-1024 subs at 2 ohms?

Asked by: Marc25
If using a single S3-1024 we will advised that you will run this on 4 Ohms, at this rate there will be no risk on speaker and the amp. If you want to run two subs (parallel) from a single GTR-601 at 2 ohms, it will work. Be advised, when doing this you need to keep the amp at moderate to low volume and well-ventilated.

How many watts is this sub?  And what's the best watts for the amp to be for this sub

Asked by: Shawn17cruz
As shown under the specs above, it can handle 450 watts of RMS power handling. That said, you can go with any amp with an RMS wattage rating of 450 watts or lower. For example, if your listening taste only requires a 200 watt amp, this would work fine as the sub can handle UP TO 450 watts. On the other hand, if you are looking to get the sub as loud as you can get it, go with an amp that has a rating of 450 RMS watts. But do not go with anything more powerful.
